Review: One Missed Call

Plot 'One Missed Call' is perhaps one too many!

As an avid horror fan (particularly J-Horror) I felt a rush of excitement when I heard the rumour that there was to be an American remake of Takeshi Miike's Chakushin Ari, but knew that going to see it would be one of those car crash moments; where you know it's going to be bad, and you know you shouldn't look, but you just can't help yourself. To cut a long story short the idea was there, but sadly the character and plot development weren't.

Despite an attractive cast, there was an ugly awkwardness to the acting thanks to the obvious and, at times, cheesy script-writing. The main saving grace was the purportedly "scary" ringtone used throughout the film to seal the fate of the dippy college students (which I immediately downloaded with the intention of scaring the bejesus out of my friend - who i suspect will see the funny side). An hour into the film, most of the audience wanted to hear the dreaded ringtone in order to bring an end to it all. The plot twists were predictable, if a little amateurish in development and execution, but overall, I didn't come out of the cinema wanting those two hours of my life back.

Verdict: Not bad, but if a horror buff, maybe give a miss to avoid inevitable disappointment!
